Hispanic Heritage Month

Join HPC and all our organizations as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) filled with various of events showcasing Hispanic and Latinx culture! All Aggies are welcomed! 

Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) is the period to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

This event will educate on some intersections of Latine immigration, the exploitation and disenfranchisement of undocumented people, the American phenomenon of Dreamers, what these things mean, how to be an ally, and why solidarity is so important. In addition to education, we will provide opportunities for the audience to engage with speakers and each other, share their experiences, as well as providing free food!

The Hispanic Heritage Month panel is an educational event which features leaders within the Hispanic community to discuss issues affecting political participation within it. Specifically, the panelists will discuss the historical challenges facing the Hispanic community and their political participation, the barriers Hispanic individuals face as activists or leaders in their community (supported by research or personal experiences), and talk about how Hispanic students/youth who experience adversity in their future leadership efforts may overcome those difficulties to become effective voices for their communities.

During this event, we are planning to have former Hispanic students speak about HHM and their experience being engineers in the Hispanic community. We will be having a presentation about HHM and also have food for the event attendees.
